Newsday.com: Jets to join Mets on TV

BY KEN BERGERSTAFF WRITER - November 3, 2005

The Jets announced yesterday a three-year broadcast partnership with SportsNet New York that will result in year-round programming geared toward giving fans more inside information. Team president Jay Cross said he believes the Jets will be the first NFL team with such a broadcasting platform."I think it's really important between our Web site and a television home to have a place that our fans call home," Cross said in a news conference at Hofstra.

The Jets will join the Mets on the 24-hour regional network, a partnership that Cross touted as a "perfect fit." Anchoring the Jets' programming will be several behind-the-scenes shows starring players and coaches - including one hosted by general manager Terry Bradway. The team also plans to broadcast classic games and tape-delayed preseason games when the network launches in April 2006.

The ambitious partnership also is in keeping with ongoing efforts by pro sports teams to find ways of publicizing themselves without the prism of traditional media."There's something good about controlling information," coach Herman Edwards said.Cable companies Time Warner (serving the city and Westchester) and Comcast (New Jersey) have agreed to carry the channel. But Cablevision, whose much-publicized opposition contributed to the Jets' failure to land a West Side stadium, has resisted. Most of Cablevision's customers are on Long Island, where thousands of Jets fans might be frozen out. Cablevision spokesman Jim Maiella did not return a call seeking comment.

Cross took a shot at Cablevision - "The squabbles usually involve only one company," he said - and bristled when asked about the apparent contradiction in having a broadcast home with the Mets but sharing a new stadium with the Giants in New Jersey.

"It is true that the history of this team goes back to Shea Stadium and Long Island," Cross said. "But you have to keep in mind that we've been playing in Jersey for almost 20 years now."Cross said he expects a joint announcement with the Giants in 2-4 weeks on details of the new stadium. He said the Jets are still looking at 15-20 sites in New Jersey for a year-round training complex they expect to occupy within two years.
